New Brunswick Power Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Development Program
Overview
New Brunswick Power (NB Power) is a government-owned electric utility company in New Brunswick, Canada. NB Power is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity that powers the homes, businesses and communities of more than 400,000 customers.
With 12 hydro, coal, oil, natural gas and diesel-powered generating stations as well as the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station and the Shediac solar farm, NB Power maintains and operates one of the most diverse generation fleets in North America and the only nuclear generating station in Atlantic Canada. NB Power has a total generating capacity of 3,799 MW, with an additional installed generating capacity of 594 MW, including 499 MW of renewables, provided by third parties through power purchase agreements. NB Power plays a crucial role in providing reliable and affordable electricity to residents and businesses while contributing to the province's economic development.
NB Power is exploring the potential deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) technology at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS). NB Power is working concurrently with two leading SMR technology developers:
- ARC Clean Technology Inc. (ARC)
- Moltex Energy (Moltex)
These advanced nuclear technologies offer the potential for cleaner, more efficient, and flexible power generation, aligning with New Brunswick's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Comtech has been engaged by NB Power to support the development of project controls processes and the front-end planning of NB Power’s SMR program. In line with the overarching goal to power our economy and the world with clean energy over the next decade, Comtech is providing services to support NB Power in shifting the focus to new energy sources and contributing to a cleaner environment.
